Grandparents…
… oft’ times are the primary childcare providers. This was true in my case, for the better part of my first five years of existence. My grandparents, Phil and Rose Niss, were terrific. Their unconditional love and caring, was easy for me to pass on to my son, Phillip [named after both of his grandfathers].
My grandfather’s passion, baseball, has become mine, and I never not think of him at the ballpark.
Let’s discuss our experiences…

I wonder about the rights of grandparents, in terms of custody or visitation with a child. If we accept the premise that we should all be pulling “for the interests of the child” then shouldn’t grandparents have a seat at the table when questions of custody and visitation is considered?

I always felt cheated when it came to grandparents. I had four fabulous ones, but. . . On my mother’s side, my grandfather died when I was 18 months old; and my grandmother, who actually lived downstairs from us, was ill so we always had to be quiet – and she passed away when I was 9. My father’s parents, who were very vital, lived in Los Angeles, a lifetime away from Brooklyn. I try to spend quality time with my granddaughter several times a week – I never want her to feel as though her grandparents were “those old people” whom she got to see for dinner on holidays.
